The Courage of Liberalism

The Courage of Liberalism

So the latest right-wing craze in the UK is the fuss over “grooming gangs” The Telegraph describes them as “mainly Asian, Muslim men” who are “systematically raping white, working class girls”. What makes this so typical of right-wing rage, aside from the racist tone and how the magnitude of the problem is exaggerated far beyond the evidence, is how the main focus of the issue is less about the crime and more about the “leftist” government that “allows” it.
This is very similar to the right-wing accusations in America that equate immigrants to rapists and murderers, also with a concerted effort to blame the liberal government for “allowing” it.
‘Text book stuff… Start with one or two isolated incidents where foreigners are convicted of violating and/or killing the most vulnerable and precious victims imaginable. (Children work well for this and unfortunately, it does happen). Then insist the problem is wide-spread or even systematic and that the liberal government is “allowing” it, maybe even sponsoring it.
This demonizes the unwanted foreigners AND the hated liberal government in one story. The fact that there are only a few actual cases, if any, only plays into the hand… “No, there are tens of thousands of them that the liberal government is ignoring.” Well, we all know that hearsay is as good as evidence when authoring propaganda.;)
So here is my response…
Liberalism requires courage. Specifically, the courage to give people freedom, even if it means the risk of potential danger. This liberalism is what constitutes a land of the free and a home of the brave. You simply can’t have freedom without some degree of danger and that’s why a “land of the free” can only be a “home of the brave”. This is liberalism. Conservatism is for people who don’t have that courage and favor security over freedom… Build walls… Arrest scary-looking people.
As someone who prefers a free world, I encourage a stronger focus on the crimes themselves instead of criticising governments for introducing the dangers that come with freedom.
